Ranil says he would set up Provincial Economic Commissions

by Mahinda P. Liyanage

I have no agreement whatsoever with the LTTE. Moreover I have an accord with the people of the country to ensure them their right to better survival, said Ranil Wickremesinghe, the leader of the United National Front.

He was addressing a public rally in Galle on November 23.

The leader of the UNF describing his strategies for the development of the country said that under a Government of his Front, nine separate economic commissions would be set up in respect of each province which would be responsible for the development of their respective provinces, in the same way the UNP Government developed the Western Province by establishing the Greater Colombo Economic Commission.

"We would develop the other regions also. The proposed economic commissions would study the problems of the respective provinces and would scheme out necessary plans and implement them in par with the needs of those regions", he further elaborated.

"Also, under my government steps would be taken to reform the existing system of education. A three year action plan would be formulated in respect of each and every school in consultation with parents, old pupils, teachers and other relevant resource persons. If needed, the said period of the action plan would be extended upto 5 years.

Arrangements would be made to train all untrained teachers and to teach management to the principals under the said scheme.

"Avenues for learning the English language, computer science and to get higher education would be expanded. Mutli-media universities would be set up for school leavers to gain vocational education and to develop their skills.

"Rural Development Youth Squadrons would be established in which every youth is expected to serve for ten months from during which period they would be paid a monthly allowance of Rs. 2000.

"After the completion of the said period of service they will be granted the choice to do a job or to further their higher education.

"To establish new industries we need the patronage of entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs won't invest their money if they don't have confidence in the existing Government.

"The business community lost confidence in the PA Government as a result of which the industrial sector swiftly declined. We will win the faith of the business community of the country and abroad and promote the industrial sector."

Many UNP regional leaders including its Galle district candidates addressed the election rally which had been organised under the guidance and directions of Vajira Abeywardane, the leader of the Galle district UNP candidates.
