Join hands with the PA to prevent the country being divided - Gen. Anuruddha Ratwatte

by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

Minister of Lands, Irrigation and Power and Deputy Defence Minister, General Anuruddha Ratwatte said at Panwila recently that the people should join hands with the PA headed by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to prevent the country being divided under a UNP-LTTE rule and to bring about peace and prosperity to a united Sri Lanka.

Minister General Ratwatte was addressing a ceremony held to distribute benefits of 'Samurdhi' and various other social services programs to the people of the Panwila Divisional AGA Division. Housing loans, building materials for houses, equipment for self-employment projects, 'Jaya Bhoomi' deeds, sports goods and school equipment were distributed at this function.

"Let us all join hands in making our efforts to create a better future for the younger generation. Let us all think openly and lead along the same way", Minister General Ratwatte invited the youth of the country. The policy of the PA Government was to serve the common man. We have taken to politics not to enjoy privileges and other benefits. We have sacrificed our personal benefits in order to serve our fellow beings", he added. There were a large number of people from Patha Dumbara who voted for the UNP at the 1994 General Elections. After the elections, those of the PA Government who came to power had taken steps to serve all alike disregarding their political views.

He therefore appealed to the people to vote for the PA at the forthcoming elections to enable the party to gain a clear majority so that they could solve many problems of the country under a stable administration.

:"The UNP leaders Ranil Wickremesinghe has given an undertaking to the Tamil political parties in the North, that if the UNP came to power they would work out a program to solve the problems that has led to the present war under which the LTTE would be given an interim administration in the North and East.

The LTTE would be accepted as the only representative of the Tamil people, and steps would be taken to deproscribe the LTTE. In short, the country would be divided under that program and a virtual Eelam would be created so that Prabhakaran would rule the North and East, while Ranil would rule only the South of the country", added General Ratwatte. Minister General Ratwatte said that he felt sorry for some people who claimed to be traditional UNP supporters, because some of them who lived in cadjan thatched huts, from inside of which the sky could be seen.

He exhibited an election poster of the UNP carrying the picture of an elephant. They were said to be traditional UNPers who did not like to change their views. They were so misled.

He appealed to those people to be intelligent and think about the situation in the country and to look at developments with clear eyes.
