'If UNP comes to power 'remote control' by LTTE' - Fowzie

by Moratuwa special correspondent

The Minister of Highways, A.H.M. Fowzie, addressing a gathering after opening a new bus stand and shopping complex at Moratuwa said, "If the UNP comes to power, we wont be able to go to Anuradhapura, the LTTE might ask us to produce our passports.

The people gave us power for six years, and they never asked us for an election. But the UNP who lost eleven elections knew that they were unable to come to power, so they tried a trick in Parliament. However, they failed, because we dissolved Parliament and called for a fresh election.

Some of their MPs do not want an election. They spent a lot of money on the election last year. Now the UNP is no more, they have come forward as the UNF. If the UNF comes to power, the 'remote control' will be with the LTTE.

The Minister of Transport and Environment, Dinesh Gunawardena said; "Today is a memorable day for the people of Moratuwa. They got a new bus stand and shopping complex. This project was completed in six months. The people of this country never asked for fresh elections, but with the help of our ten MPs, the UNP conspired. Your former MP, Prof. G.L. Peiris is in their lap. This Government increased the salaries of Government servants and gave an allowance to pensioners. The UNP has promised the Tigers an interim Government for a short period. If they give it over for one day, there will be no chance of getting it back. Therefore the people should give a clear mandate for the PA and save the country."

Jeevan Kumaratunga, the chief SLFP organizer for Moratuwa said that the UNP was in power for seventeen years, but they could not give the people of Moratuwa this type of benefits. They ruined the bus service of this country. The UNP has no right to ask the people to bring them into power. But the people will give the correct verdict. The UNP will lose for the twelfth time.

All these things happened due to the constitution of J.R. Jayewardene. Our senior left politicians like Dr. N.M. Perera and Dr. Colvin R. de Silva said that there will be a constitutional crisis. But J.R. never listened to that, even Ranil Wickremesinghe supported this. The UNP leader is trying to form a government with bankrupt politicians. Ranil enjoys it when S.B. talks filth and abuses the President. If he is a good leader, he should stop this. The decent people in the UNP are also disgusted over this issue.

The Minister of Justice, Batty Weerakoon said; Moratuwa is a leftist bastion since 1947, and our party member Somaweera Chandrasiri won the election from prison. Now there is an election and you have to give the correct verdict. Ranil Wickremesinghe says that he will become the next Prime Minister and appoint the Cabinet Ministers.

According to JR's constitution, the President has the power to appoint the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Ministers. He knows this but he is trying to hoodwink the people. He also says that he will open up the Parliament and give orders to the armed forces. It is not the truth. All these powers are vested in the President. The people should think carefully and vote for the PA, or there will be a constitutional crisis.

The Mayor of Moratuwa, Ananda Kusumsiri thanked the Minister of Transport, Dinesh Gunawardena, and Jeevan Kumaratunga for giving the people of moratuwa a modern bus stand. He further said that the council had taken a decision for those who have a monthly income of Rupees three hundred to be exempt from taxes. Owing to this , seven thousand families of Moratuwa will benefit.
