Training program for women victims of N-E war

The Social Services Ministry has launched a training scheme for women victims of the North/East war to enable them to become self employed Additional Secretary Ms Viji Jegarasasingham told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

The first 6-month course in sewing began at the Kalpitiya Refugee Camp a few days ago. Forty women are now being trained by experienced seamstresses who are also camp dwellers she said.

Once their training is over they will be granted a minimum of Rs. 5000 for the purchase of their sewing machines. The program is targeted at enlisting them in the social security and pension scheme for the self employed once they are in business.

The program will be extended to cover all the Refugee Camps Ms. Jegarasasingham said.

Armed heist at jewellery shop 

Three persons armed with pistols had come in a van and robbed a jewellery shop at Mawaramandiya junction on Saturday. They threatened the salesmen at gunpoint and robbed jewellery worth Rs. 2,800,000.

No arrests have yet been made.

OIC Sapugaskanda police Lal Rohana Gamage and K. Chandrasiri of the crime branch are conducting further inquiries. 

Dengue, diarrhoea in Trincomalee

Three suspected 'dengue' cases were admitted to Trincomalee base hospital. The patients from Trincomalee town were children. One aged five years and the other two each aged eighteen months. The two 18 month old patients have been transferred to the General Hospital, Kandy for treatment.

In addition to 'dengue' there were several cases of diarrhoea mostly children admitted to Trincomalee hospital. A few dysentery cases have been transferred to this hospital from Kantale. The patients were children. Use of contaminated water is considered the cause of the disease.

Mentally-retarded patient's father appeals for help

Gani, the father of mentally-retarded grown up boy appeals for help to admit his son to the Cadabams Home for Mentally Disabled in Bangalore, India. Sulaiman Ibrahim (30) has been recommended by various psychiatrists that he must undergo in-patient treatment for occupational therapy at Cadabams, located at Gulakamale village, 17th mile, Kanakapura Road, Bangalore 560062.

According to the Secretary and Trustee of Cadabams, the cost of long term treatment will be around Indian rupees 650,000 (Sri Lanka rupees 1,500,000).

His father appeals for financial help from the public especially the Muslim community and Memon community of Sri Lanka for the generous contributions, donations from Zakhat Funds will also be accepted.

Donations could be remitted to A/C No. 0300-076407-101 Ceylinco Housing Branch, Seylan Bank or any other branches of Seylan Bank in Sri Lanka, or personally contact the father on 521805 or at home 19/157, Farm Road, Colombo 15.

Kidney donor needed

Mrs. Jayasinghe Arachchige Winifreda Fonseka of 508/8 Welihena Kochchikade is suffering from acute end-stage renal disease and needs an urgent kidney transplant to save her life according to Dr. C. A. Herath, Consultant Nephrologist Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital. Mrs. Fonseka is seeking a donor in the 'O' positive blood group willing to donate a kidney to enable her to undergo this operation expeditiously.
