by Z. M. Razik in Kandy Three of the six treasure hunters were released on Rs. 200,000 personal bail each and directed to report to police once a month by the Kandy Magistrate D. L. M. Seniviratne on Wednesday. When the case was called, the suspects Upual Bandara, Kusumsiri Hapugoda, P. G. Samarakoon, U. G. Dixon Bandara, J. G. Jayashantha and H. G. U. N. Wickremasinghe of Wattapola and Pilimatalawa were produced in court from remand. According to police the suspects had gone in search of treasure and broken a 27 feet long reclining Buddha statue at the Gallangolla Rajamaha Viharaya, Kadugannawa on July 7. The counsel for the suspects told court that all the suspects are on remand for a long period and moved that they be released on bail. Inspector D. Gurusinghe, OIC Divisional Crime Detective Bureau (DC DB) Kandy and sergeant D. M. Dissanayake submitted a further report and said that they were not objecting to bail in respect of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th suspects as police has completed inquiries against them. They also told court that police inquiries in respect of 1st, 5th and 6th suspects were still incomplete and objected to bail. The Magistrate released the 2nd, 3rd and 4th suspects on bail and directed them to report to the OIC, DCDB, Kandy between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on the last Sunday of every month. He also remanded the 1st, 5th and 6th suspects till January 9 and directed the 2nd, 3rd and 4th suspects to appear in court on that date. |
