Flower and Tendulkar generate contrasting headlines

LONDON, (Reuters) - Andy Flower and Sachin Tendulkar, the two top batsmen in the world test ratings, have experienced dramatically contrasting fortunes over the past week.

Flower consolidated his position as the world's most effective batsman with an unbeaten century for Zimbabwe in the series-clinching second test against Bangladesh in Chittagong, taking his test average to 56.6, less than a run behind his Indian rival.

Tendulkar, however, barely troubled the scorers in the second test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth before ending the match with his reputation sullied after being found guilty of ball tampering.

Below them, Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene -- run out for 99 in the first test against West Indies and dismissed for 88 in the second -- and Brian Lara, with innings of 178 and 40 in the first test, strengthened their positions in the top 10.

The top three bowlers remain unchanged, although Muttiah Muralitharan caught the eye with 11 wickets in the victory over West Indies in the first test in Galle.

South African skipper Shaun Pollock edged closer to fellow pace bowler Glenn McGrath after taking six wickets in the drawn second test against India including five for 40, one of which was Tendulkar's wicket, in the first innings in Port Elizabeth.
