picked for West Indies women's tour
When the West Indies men's team leaves by the end of the December, the West Indies women's team will arrive in Sri Lanka to play 1 Test match and 3 ODIs in Colombo and Kandy. Arrangements are being made to make the tour a success as this is the first time WIs ladies will be playing international cricket in Sri Lanka. A 14-strong team SL has been picked from the pool along with two reserves, the selector being Mercian Fernando. The team will be coached by former national cricketer, Nihal Kodituwakku. The girls who presently practice at SSC grounds under Vanessa Bowen and Rohan Fernando will move over to the NCC indoor nets to allow the WIs to play their Test and ODIs from the 26th of this month. In the first week of December the Lanka XI will play against a very strong under-17 boys' team from Joseph Vaz College. Gwen Herat, President Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka announced another international tour on the cards for end of 2002 which will be finalised after return from UK after negotiations. She will leave after the West Indies series. Herat said that the bowling has improved, especially with Chamani Seneviratne and Gayathri Kariyawasam. Sudarshini Sivanathan who was vice captain on the World Cup tour to New Zealand in 2001, will lead the side. Sri Lanka has already qualified for the World Cup 2005 in South Africa. Singer in the main sponsor, Lanka Tiles is the co-sponsor.
