Amerasinghe at JVP rally today
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna's self-exiled leader Somawansa Amerasinghe made a welcome return to the country on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight from Britain in the early hours of Thursday (Nov 22) ending a 12 year political hibernation, which party Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa described as a good omen for the JVP ahead of the December 5 general election. Weerawansa speaking to the Daily News said that Amerasinghe, 58, had decided on his own to return to the country of his birth with the intention of adding more thrust to the on-going election campaign of the JVP which according to him is drawing record crowds countrywide. He said their party leader's presence at this election was the timely need of the hour and the JVP will launch their campaign accordingly to the wishes of Amerasinghe. "Our leader and comrade Somawansa Amerasinghe is a very experienced politician and he is well versed to speak on any given subject having been involved in the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna political network overseas. He is also the only surviving member of our original politburo which also comprised the likes of our late leader and founder Rohana Wijeweera, and his deputy Upatissa Gamanayake, Sumith Athukorale, and Wijedasa Liyanarachchi to name a few". His return therefore at this crucial hour is a blessing in disguise not only for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna but most importantly to the people of this country who are being taken for a ride by the PA and the UNP" Weerawansa said. Asked what would the strategy be of Somawansa Amerasinghe, Wimal
Weerawansa said that their leader had indicated his desire to speak to the
nation commencing with the JVP's second election rally to be held at
Kalutara later today, and continue to address the public in all major
cities leading to the polling day.
