UNP has evaded answers to query says Tylvin

JVP General Secretary Tylvin Silva said the UNP's reply to his query of November 11th addressed to Ranil Wickremesinghe did not anyway answer the major issues posed by him.

His main question involved the Interim Administration for the North East as enunciated in the UNP Election Manifesto, and the question of negotiations with the LTTE aimed at ensuring the Unitary State of Sri Lanka. These issues had been deliberately side tracked, Silva stated in a letter to UNP leader Ranil Wickremesighe.

He said that Gamini Athukorala's reply on behalf of Ranil Wickremesinghe speaks of a temporary interim administration consisting of Administrative Officers, a stance in contrast to what the UNP Media Spokesman Karunasena Kodituwakku stated on the TV programme of "Eththa Neththa" of the 12th. Kodituwakku had said that the temporary administrative machinery will consist of parties represented in Parliament.

The second question evaded in the UNP reply, Tylvin Silva said the question as to whether the North and the East are two distinct provinces.

The UNP's reply was that it is a matter of law that has to be referred to the Supreme Court. Tylvin Silva says that this is a UNP tactic of using the Supreme Court as a shield to evade the answers.

He points that any negotiation initiated by a party of this mentality would buttress the demand for a separation though they say that their endeavour is to re-unite the country.

Tylvin Silva spotlighted the absence of a clear statement as to the unitary status of the country in the election manifesto of the UNP.

This most relevant point should have been clearly embodied in the election manifesto of any political party pledging constitutional reforms.

Tylvin Silva in his letter also asks Ranil Wickremesinghe to give prompt replies for the two questions:

(A) Would your party withdraw the proscription on LTTE?

(B) Are all the candidates contesting under UNP ticket in Jaffna District members of the United National Party ? Can you give an assurance that all of them do not have any link whatsoever with the LTTE?
