high morale in public servants too
Public servants should be provided with a suitable environment to display their talent and ability in service; cricketer turned politician and Colombo district PA candidate Arjuna Ranatunga told an election meeting at Ratmalana. He further said; "Manpower is the most powerful force in a country. The progress of a country depends on the performance of manpower and its contribution to the economy. In a mixed-economy such as Sri Lanka, the public service has an immense responsibility. Similarly the contribution expected of them is equally high. The independence of the public service should not fall a prey to politics. "Promotions and salary increments should be based on the commitment and performance of each public servant. Similarly, arrangements for their professional advancement and awarding of scholarships should be devoid of political considerations. "When priority is given to political bias, the public service is bound to be more and more inefficient. The allowances given to public servants and facilities granted to their children should be constantly aimed at maintaining a high morale and thereby improving the standard of the public service. It is in this environment, that many people follow my vision and
discard political differences. During the last few years the PA government
has introduced considerable changes in the public service. It has done its
best to raise the standard of the public service.
