Sand bar a hazard for fishermen

Once again the sand bar has become a serious hazard to hundreds of fishermen residing along the Chilaw sea coast.

More than 300 fishing boats with outboard motors have to pass through 'Waters-Meet' or Moya kata where the Chilaw lagoon meets the sea at Chilaw.

Many of the fishermen who are greatly inconvenienced today reside in such places like the Wella, Alutwatta, Ambakandawila Iranawila and even Pambala and Toduwawa in the southern region of Chilaw.

The periodical formation of this sand bar which obstructs the free flow of boats to enter the sea for deep sea fishing has become a perennial problem to these poor people.

W. Santiagu Fernando (55) residing at Alutwatta said that every year they are faced with this grave occupational hazard yet the authorities concerned apparently have not done anything positive to permanently stop this periodical hazard.

M. Anthony Fernando living at Wella said that so far only temporary measures have been adopted by those concerned.

He said that several of his friends had to take treatment for backache etc. after lifting pushing and pulling their boats on the sand.
