Peiris Answering a question raised by the press regarding a distortion of facts by Prof. G. L. Peiris on what actually he said when addressing the SLFP Anura Bandaranaike said:"According to the present Constitution the President has the powers to appoint a Prime Minister and Ministers. Therefore there is an unfortunate clash between the President and a future Prime Minister, on matters of governance. The President can always prorogue Parliament. This she can do every year according to the Constitution.This is according to the J.R.Jayawardene Constitution. Even President Premadasa prorogued Parliament when he was facing an impeachment. This is the prerogative of the President which was even exercised by the UNP, said Anura Bandaranaike. Prof. G. L. Peiris had in a speech to the National Chamber of Commerce at its Annual General Meeting recently distorted what he said to the point of an absurdity, former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike said. |
