'UNP running for their twelfth defeat'

by D.M. Henri

UNP which lost 11 successive elections since 1994 under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe is now running for their 12th defeat in a row, thereby setting a new Guinness record, PA candidate Noel Padmasiri Kariyawasam said.

Addressing a PA election meeting at Pahalagamhaya, Induruwa in Bentota, Padmasiri said, after Rauff Hakeem crossed over to the Opposition, PA entered into Memorandum of Understanding with the JVP to implement a short term common programme intended to provide several reliefs to the people such as writing off of agricultural loans.

"But the UNP with the backing of financial racketeers bought over the reactionary elements to cross over with a view to grab power in an undemocratic way." In order to preserve democracy, the President dissolved the Parliament and sought a fresh mandate from the people."

He also pointed that despite the ongoing war, the PA Government has spent billions to upgrade the infrastructure facilities such as highways, irrigation, education and housing.
