SLFP has won the hearts of people - Sunil Perumbuli

by Homagama Special Corrospondent

The SLFP which ruled this country for 24 years with a 40 per cent vote base has made massive socio-economic and political changes, Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman and Colombo District PA candidate Sunil Perumbuli said.

Addressing several election meetings at Diyagama, Deepangoda and Munamalewatta, Perumbuli said: "I joined the SLFP as the age of 17 and since then I am with the party facing many upheavals.

"The People's Alliance Government formed with the SLFP in 1994 successfully won all elections which were held during the past seven years. Therefore, the SLFP is a political party which has won the hearts of the people.

"Some PA politicians who crossed over to the UNP gained all perks and privileges from the PA Government are now criticising the PA leadership. If there was any shortcomings of the President, these dissidents had seven years to point that out. After earning money and all perks, the allegations made by these are baseless. They had a moral right to inform the President and leave the PA."

Perumbuli said, the people gave a mandate to the PA government on October 10 last year for six years while the President has also received a mandate up to 2006. After one year, the UNP arbitrarily destroyed that people's mandate. If the UNP could destroy that mandate through various conspiracies, I would like to ask the UNP what their political culture is?

Explaining his ideas on the ethnic problem, Perumbuli said, the two major political parties (PA and UNP) should discuss with the Sinhalese to evolve an acceptable solution to the LTTE. Candid efforts were made by the President to settle this issue. Finally the UNP did not cooperate with the Government on it. Until this ethnic problem is solved, there is no way to rebuild the country's economy, he asserted.
