I did the ground work to get Hakeem out - Mahinda Samarasinghe

Both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister who reprsent the Kalutara district have failed to provide solutions for even minor problems in the Kalutara area, UNP's Kaluthara District leader Mahinda Samarsinghe said.

He further said "after coming into power, I will dawn a new era for the Kalutara district, Samarasinghe told an election rally in Matugama.

"I was always with leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and did my best to the party to topple this infamous Government. It is I who did the ground work to get Hakeem and the group to the Opposition," he said.

I thank the former PA MP Bandula Parakrama Gunawardane for joining hands with the UNP at the crucial time. We were short of one MP to win the impeachment.

Therefore, we must respect him strengthening his hands for the sacrifice he did at this election.

We must deviate from mud slinging politics. That will not help the country to solve problems. We must always pass a good message to the people. We will have to work at least 15 to 18 hours per day to get the country out of this present situation. Our party has a vision and a strong leader. Our MPs are also ready for it. Therefore, people must help us to form a strong Government that help us to launch our development plan without any hindrance."

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremenayeke requested me to conduct the election without posters and banners. I agreed to the request and sent him a letter calling a meeting of all candidates to get a final decision. By decorating only in this area I set an example for a environmentally friendly election campaign. Some people told me that Prime Minister's call for a poster and banner free election because the PA does not have people to paste posters, Samarasinghe said.

The IMF has warned the Government to prevent from pledging promises which cannot be implemented. People still remember the promises given by the PA in 1994. Today people cannot be deceived by playing the old disc of the UNP-LTTE pact, he said.

We will request members of all parties to join hands with us after December 5. We also urge the police officers to prevent harassing of our supporters. A new era will begin after December 5 under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe. It will be a rapid development era to lift the country out of the present problem which will create a conducive environment for people to lead a comfortable life, Samarasinghe said.
