News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Lak Vanitha Peramuna unveils plans to help women by Rodney Martinesz UNP's Lak Vanitha Peramuna on Tuesday unveiled plans to expand their services to women in distress under a new UNP regime. A 50 member body of women will form into a Council to identify specific areas that need immediate attention. A women's Centre known as "Kantha Diri Piyasa" will be set up in each electorate offering special types of services like legal and medical assistance, counselling and in the law enforcement area. An executive Committee of five will be set up to propose amendments to existing laws governing women's rights. The relief offered will extend to war widows to help them in such matters as obtaining their pensions without delay and overcome other snags in administrative wheel and displaced women and women living in the areas under terrorist threat. Mrs. Rosy Senanayake, Goddwill Ambassador United Nations Population Fund and ex-co member of the UNP said they were confident that leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would take steps to set right the injustices suffered by women under the present regime and ensure their dignity in society. It was the UNP government which introduced all anti rape laws, a Women's charter which extended the period of maternity leave for mothers. Ms. Beulah Moonasinghe, Chairperson Agromat Foundation and Ex-co member of the UNP, Kanthi Kannangara Attorney-at-Law, Sri Lanka's Representative of the SAARC Law Conference and UNP ex-co member, Actress Anoja Weerasinghe and Joint-Secretary Sri Lanka Lak Vanitha Peramuna and Sanjai Apsara Boteju also participated. |
