'Kamburupitiya exemplary in conducting peaceful elections'

"It is necessary to have political parties and elections if a democratic system of Government in a country is to continue and in an election their should not be conflicts, but only an election. There should not be conflicts, but only an environment to accept victory and defeat alike with pleasure as in a game," said the Anunayake of the Sri Rohana Sangha Sabha and Chairman Kamburupitiya Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya, Ven. Prof. Gatare Dhammapala Nayaka Thera.

Prof. Dhammapala Nayake Thera said, "this while chairing a meeting held at the Vidyaniketha Pirivena Kamburupitiya held to draw up a program to have a common pact between the political parties contesting the election to conduct a peaceful process without resorting to violence.

"This meeting was attended by the Maha Sangha, members of political parties and traders organisations and police officers in the area.

"It was also decided at this meeting to extend this program to all the electorates in the Matara District under the sponsorship of the Matara District Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya".

The Ven. Omare Kasyapa Thera, Secretary of the Matara District Saranarakshaka Bala Mandalaya said, "the Kamburupitiya Electorate has set an example for the last several years by having peaceful elections without conflicts between political parties that contested such elections, and that this exemplary tradition should be carried on in the future too.

"The Matara District Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya is dedicated to re-build and protect the co-operation between these political parties at this election too," the Thera said.

The Asst. Suptd of Police, Matara, Danapala Nanayakkara, said, "a pact for peace and co-operation between political parties is very important at an election and that those in responsible positions should always instruct others to maintain peace without encouraging violence".

Pema Ratnayake, JVP member of the SPC, said, "the exemplary tradition set in Kamburupitiya of having peaceful elections should be carried out in the future too," and that all political parties should do their propaganda activities fairly without harassing the opponents.

Reggie Wellappili, member of the PS, Kamburupitiya, H. A. Bandula member of PS Kamburupitiya and Pradeep Weththasingha OIC Kamburupitiya also spoke.
