'Economic Development sans power cuts'

by Lokubandara Munasinghe

Kalutura district UNP leader Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday assured that he would ensure the resurgence of the stagnant development process in the Kalutara District to generate employment opportunities for the youth if he is elected as a peoples' representative.

"Although the PA Government has been in power for the last seven years the Government has not been able to serve the people or ensure economic development. This dismal situation will change once a UNP Government headed by Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe comes into power," Samarasinghe said addressing a series of election rallies in the Horana electorate.

"People rallied around the Government in 1994 but the Government has not been able to meet the aspiration of the masses. The economy has collapsed. Thousands of youth are jobless. The cost of living has sky rocketed. The attack on the BIA has resulted in further economic setbacks. Only a UNP Government can bring this country out of this abyss.

"The UNP leader has come forward to shoulder this responsibility and that a UNP led Government will bring much needed change and development to the Kalutara district".

"He pointed out that although the district is represented by Prime Minister Wickremanayake no steps have been taken to improve the economy or ensure a systematic development process in the area. There has also been no foreign aid allocations for the district during the last seven years," he said.

"I am the Deputy Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the Inter Parliamentary Association. I can lobby for much needed development aid to develop this area and generate employment opportunities for thousands of unemployed youth".

He said, "that he was one of those responsible in creating the chain of events that led to the toppling of the PA Government and for lobbying support from Mr. Hakeem that led to the debilitation of the Government.

"There were only 48 hours to go for the No Confidence Motion to go through, but the Government dissolved Parliament in the face of imminent defeat," he said.

"Vote wisely. Vote for the UNP and we will ensure prosperity and economic development sans power cuts."
