"There was not a word today by any Government Politician on what happened to the Rs. 1,500 promised to the unemployed, or bread at Rs. 3.50", he told an election rally in Mahara. "All coalition Governments led by the SLFP were disasters and it was left to the UNP to clear up the mess. "Similarly this time too the UNP will be called upon to resurrect the country and place it on the path to progress for which the UNP has a proven track record". He said, "he entered the fray at the request of leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in whom the nation has placed its hopes. "He urged the voters not to fall prey to the false propaganda by the Government of an "Ali-Koti Haula." "No power on earth can turn the massive tide of support to the UNP and victory was assured on December 5th," he said. He further said, the good name he has earned in his film life would be maintained in his political carrier too unlike some others who had soiled their hands after entering the field of politics. "He was initially invited to contest the Mahara By-Election in 1983, but due to the long standing friendship with Vijaya Kumaratunga who was the rival candidate he rejected this offer. "Now he would like to extend this friendship to the voters of Mahara."
