Education officials canvass for UNP in schools

by Manjula Fernando

The Western Province Education Ministry has issued instructions to Principals through Zonal Education Officers to stop election canvassers from entering schools during school time.

This follows a number of complaints received from parents and teachers from three leading schools in the Colombo district that a group of election campaigners infiltrated their schools on Thursday.

The group was led by a Western Province Deputy Education Director, a former Western Province Education Director and a former principal of a leading Colombo school. They had allegedly canvassed support for the UNP and distributed hand bills among students and those who were present at the time.

A spokesman for the Provincial Education Office said that no outsiders were permitted in schools during school hours and there was no excuse that these two education officers and the principal were ignored of these basic regulations.

He said, "Education officers are not allowed to manipulate or intimidate using his capacity as an high official in the field. Therefore an investigation will be initiated against the Deputy Education Director who was reported to be among the group".
