UNP will hand over a peaceful country for future generations - Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku

by Rodney Martinesz

The United National Party will end the present misrule on the 5th of December and hand over a country of peace and unity for the future generations, former MP Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku stated.

Addressing a series of election rallies in Hanwella, Dr. Kodithuwakku said, "that it was a common view in this country that wherever the UNP held the reins of power the nation witnessed development and when it was ruled by other parties the country went backwards in every sphere.

"Under these regimes the cost of living increased as a result of the price of goods being dictated by the commission agents while halting all avenues of income and driving the poor and middle class to despair.

"Today even in the capital city, people are living amidst severe hardships.

"Under the UNP there were housing projects the Janasaviya program, the free mid day meal, garment factories etc. which provided a strong base for the poor and middle class families.

"However, most of these schemes have been cancelled, while those that are there continue on a much lower scale".

He said, "that earlier the economy of the Hewagam Korale consisting of Kaduwela Homagama and Avissawellla depended on the three cornerstones of the rubber industry, animal husbandry and the indigenous incomes of the Kelani Valley.

"However the wrong economic policies followed by the PA Government had seen the end of all these income avenues placing the people under severe economic pressure.

"The only thing the Government did for these poor and middle class people is to push them to prawn their jewellery and get into debt.

Today banks are stacked with mountains of gold jewellery of the poor masses who are unable to redeem them due to the wrong economic policies followed by this Government.

The Governments puts the blame for all ills on the war and has hoodwinked the people for 7 years".

Dr. Kodithuwakku said, "the Government by denying the free will of the people through rigging elections, had brought the country to disaster.

"Murder, rape, armed robbery have reached unprecedented levels today and the mounting disasters had caused the PA to disintegrate with many stalwarts deserting its ranks and joining the UNP led by Ranil Wickremesinghe".

He said, "the Chandrika Government knowing very well that the country was heading for disaster, without thinking of a solution joined hands with the JVP which move shocked the people.

What the JVP wanted, was to join a weak Government and thereby enhance its political power. Dr. Kodithuwakku stated."

He said, "that the JVP having forgotten the hopes of their followers to realise its narrow ends had today fallen into the same hole as the PA and is struggling to get out of it.

"The people are eagerly wanting to elect a Government under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe who will resolve peace and a united country for future generations," Dr. Kodithuwakku said.
