by Sarath Malalasekera Candidates at the forthcoming elections should avoid being garlanded. The garlands could be bombs. The warning came from Deputy Inspector General of the Western Province South Jayantha Wickremaratne, when he addressed candidates for the district at the Government Agent's office yesterday. DIG Wickremaratne cited the Rajiv Gandhi assassination as an example of how suicide killers worked. A.H.M. Fowzie of PA and M.H. Mohamed of the UNP, led the delegations to the conference. Colombo DIG Gerard Ignatius, Colombo Central Senior SP D.A. de Fonseka, Senior SPs Lionel Gunatilleke, Gamini Karunatilleke, D.W. Dayaratne also associated with the DIG. DIG Wickremaratne also requested everyone to refrain from violating the provisions given to them for a peaceful and fair election. 'Prevent your supporters violating the election laws. This includes pasting posters, banners and using loudspeakers,' the DIG said. Propaganda can be done without obstruction to road users and the general public. "Do not use loudspeakers while the vehicle is in motion. The propaganda work should end at or before 9 p.m. every day."
