Rail strike called off

by Ranil Wijayapala

The Locomotive Operative Engineers Union agreed last night to call off their three day long strike following discussions with Transport and Environment Minister, Dinesh Gunawardane.

"A normal train service will be resumed today as usual," an official of the union told the Daily News last night.

A spokesman for the Transport Ministry said that the engine drivers agreed with the Minister to report for duty from last midnight as they satisfied with the assurance given by the Minister.

He said the Minister assured the engine drivers union to clarify the letters issued by the railway authorities regarding the appointment of 37 employees attached to the department as engine drivers.

The engine drivers union also agreed with the Minister regarding the appointing of 37 railway employees as engine drivers at this discussion, he added.

The engine drivers launched a strike at midnight on Tuesday protesting against the appointing of 37 railway employees as engine drivers by the Railway Department inconveniencing thousands of train commuters for three days.
