Canada names LTTE terrorist The Superintendent of Financial Institutions of Canada on Thursday issued a new list of terrorist organisations which for the first time included the LTTE, to all Canadian financial and insurance institutions. "This is another triumph of the diplomatic battle against the LTTE global network that the Sri Lankan government has been engaged with for the past seven years," said the Foreign Ministry spokesman. The new list includes 83 new names of terrorist individuals and organisations, claimed the Canadian Finance Ministry Official website http://www.osfi-bsif.gc.ca. The latest development in Canada follows its measures to introduce new laws aimed at suppressing terrorism funding and also at freezing the assets of the listed groups. According to the website, the Superintendent has instructed the financial institutions to be vigilant on the transactions of the LTTE and other listed organisations and alert the Financial Intelligence Task Force and the Canadian Intelligence Service, if any dealing is found. Canadian Finance Minister Paul Martin who was earlier accused of participating in LTTE affiliated fund raising dinners and Foreign Minister John Manley last week announced the implementation of the tough regulations which is-line with the September 28 UN Resolution on curbing terrorist funding. During the recent past Canada experienced more violence by murder and terror gangs of the LTTE, mainly by the two rival gangs A. K. Kannan and VVT groups in Ottawa. Canadian national papers like 'National Post' continuously advocated the urgent necessity of banning the LTTE in Canada, as it was done in the UK and the USA. |
