Sudath to focus on a child's suffering

Emerging film director Sudath Devapriya has focused attention on a familiar issue seen in our society but from a very different angle which others don't see.

z_stage1.jpg (16093 bytes)"Udu Gan Yamaya," the latest film by Devapriya is based on the period of terror which reigned in this country a decade ago. "It is true that this has been a topic for many films, teledramas and stage dramas, but still appeals to the people of this country as they suffered much during that period," Sudath says.

Deviating from others, Sudath has focused his film on a nine-year-old child (who plays the main role) who loses his father during this unforgettable period. The child's father is killed but the body is not found. This is a most heartrending situation which will cause grief in every human mind.

The film is based on a true story that took place in a hamlet in the Southern province, which was largely affected during the terror period. "The lives of people who encountered terror is still pathetic. Other characters found in my film are still living in this small village with their hidden agonies," Sudath said. "In this village, I saw how a little child who lost his father during that period was still suffering. This largely influenced me to do this film," Sudath says. The script of the film is also by him.

The film was shot in Kathaluwa, Koggala. The shooting has now been completed and the film is now in the process of dubbing and mixing." I expect to screen it during the first half of next year," he says. The film stars Chandani Seneviratne, Suminda Sirisena, Richard Weerakkody, Dulika Marapana, Giriraj Kaushalya, Rex Kodippili, Dilip Rohana, Saumya Liyanage, Molly Fernando and Thisaru Yuwanika.

Music is by Sarath Fernando while photography is by M.D. Mahindapala.Assistant Director is J. Sivagurunathan.

This is the third film by Sudath whose first film - 'Elivena Dawasa' (The Dawn) has now been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Canberra Film Festival in Australia and the New Delhi Cultural Film Festival in India. His second film was 'Tharanaya'. Sudath paid his gratitude to the Film Development Fund of the National Film Corporation (NFC) and Corporation Chairman Tissa Abeysekera for providing funds for his film. "If not for the NFC, I would never have been able to do a film like this," Sudath concluded.
