Attacks
against JVP on the rise The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in a press release states that political attacks directed against the JVP are escalating by the day in the run up to the December 5 General Election. The JVP further points out that the majority of these attacks against their party officials and their offices have been reported from the Western Province. A group of supporters comprising five men belonging to the UNP Kalutara District contestant Hemantha Wickremarachchi had reportedly issued death threats to a JVP activist Sarath Pushpasiri of Kindelpitiya, Bandaragama at around 11.30 pm. on October 30. The supporters of the UNP contestant had further warned Pushpasiri against continuing to indulge in JVP politics in the area, and that if he runs a JVP office in his residence that he will be killed accordingly. The thugs had issued death threats to Sarath Pushpasiri's wife as well in addition to destroying several taps in his household, before making their exit reiterating that they were the supporters of Wickremarachchi. The JVP had lodged a complaint in this regard with the Bandaragama Police. Meanwhile in a separate incident on November 2 at around 12.30 a.m. a gang of thugs had destroyed the sign boards and electricity bulbs of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna branch office at Kolonnawa having issued death threats to the JVP official there Jagath Anura. The thugs who had arrived in an unregistered double cab had warned JVPer Jagath Anura against continuing to indulge in JVP politics in Kolonnawa and had pasted posters of UNP Colombo District contestant Janaka Mallimarachchi. They had also warned him against reporting the incident to the Police and that they
would be coming again on November 3. The JVP had lodged a complaint in this regard with
