by Ranil Wijayapala and Hanwella group correspondent.

Land, Irrigation and Power Minister and Deputy Defence Minister General Anuruddha Ratwatte said on Saturday that it was the bounden duty of the politicians to strengthen the hands of the Security Forces by providing them legal powers to prevent terrorism.

The Minister after handing over 32 houses constructed by the Army Seva Vanitha Unit at Kosgama, Avissawella to war heroes and their family members, said that politicians were not yet committed to strengthen the hands of the Security Forces.

The Seva Vanitha Unit of the Army has completed the third stage of the Golden Jubilee Ranaviru Village at a cost of Rs. 10.3 million.

The Minister said eleven Security Forces personnel have to be in remand in Jaffna due to the non-existence of the emergency law in their endeavour to prevent terrorism in the peninsula.

He said over 18,000 youth had sacrificed their lives for their motherland in the battle fronts. Of them 8440 were killed in action while another 9240 youth have become disabled due to the ongoing war, the Minister added.

A number of over 3000 Police personnel have also sacrificed their lives for the war, the Minister added.

He said the people of this country should unite in preventing terrorism in the country emulating the way American citizens acted when their country came under terrorist attack on September 11.

The Minister said that it was now apparent that some groups were making alliances with terrorist groups in the forthcoming elections.

He appealed to the public to assist in strengthening the hands of the Security Forces personnel encouraging them to fight the war with greater enthusiasm.
