Rejection of MULF's nomination list for Gampaha district challenged

by Kumar Wethasinghe

The Secretary, Muslim United Liberation Front (MULF) on Friday filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the Gampaha District Returning Officer to reject their list of nominations on October 27 in connection with the forthcoming general election.

The petitioner states in their nomination list the 19th candidate's name Mohamed Naleem Mohamed Riyaz had been incorrectly stated in the accompanying affidavit as M. K. M. Riyaz and for this reason the Returning Officer had rejected their list on the ground that it was not in conformity with the Parliamentary Elections Act.

The petitioner had pleaded to issue notice on the respondents and a writ of certiorari directing them to accept the nominations to contest the December 5 general election.
