mob on rampage PA motorcade, Samurdhi village attacked A large mob of UNP supporters attacked the motorcade carrying the participants of the inaugural PA election rally at Tammennawa, Tambuttegama injuring several persons and damaging seven SLTB buses on Saturday night. Tambuttegama police said that a gang of thugs have launched the attack by hurling stones and petrol bombs, one bus caught fire as a result. Five persons were rushed to the Anuradhapura General Hospital with burning injuries. According to hospital sources, one of the victims is in critical condition. The others under treatment are: N.A.Chandraratne, K.Punchibanda, K.B.Chaminda Ratnayake and Nimal Dayananda, the conductor of the bus. The damaged buses belong to the Rajarata Bus Company of the SLTB. In another incident, a group of 30 thugs, supporters of the UNP launched an attack on three houses and 13 shops in the Kumara Eliya Samurdhi village in the NCP. Samurdhi Development Officer Ajith Sooriyabandara's house was also among them. Another four persons forcibly entered the Rajarata United Foundation Youth Centre at Rajanganaya Track 17 and destroyed its telephone exchange, several computers and electronic type writers. Ruchira Sampath, a member of the youth centre was injured in the attack. Ruchira is now under treatment at Nochchiyagama hospital. One suspect and a lorry used to transport the attackers has been seized and produced before the Tambuttegama Magistrate yesterday, police said. Investigations are being conducted under the direction of Tambuttegama HQI G.M.Wijerathne, Nochchiyagama OIC M.K.Samararathne and Talawa OIC P.O.L.S.De Silva. |
