Election violence: JVP supporter killed

The Janatha Vimukti Permauna (JVP) in a press release issued yesterday, (4) said that an active member of the JVP in the Digamadulla District died in an attack by thugs. The deceased has been identified as B. H. M. Wimalatissa Bandara and he had died after admission to the hospital by the police who had found him unconscious at Miriswatte.

Following is the full text of the press release:

The attacks by thugs in the present election campaign against the JVP has increased and the groups of thugs of the People's Alliance (PA) and the United National Party (UNP) politicos are carrying out their tasks being incensed at the certain victory of the JVP in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

An active member of the JVP in the Digamadulla District, B. H. M. Wimalatissa Bandara who was involved in canvassing for the JVP was killed in an attack by thugs.

Yesterday (3), there was a UNP political meeting and Wimalatissa was proceeding to Miriswatte from Padiyatalawa when he was attacked. He had fallen unconscious and the police had found him lying unconscious. He was admitted to the hospital where he died later. A sickle and a slipper believed to belong to the person who had taken part in the attack on Wimalatissa was found near the place where he was found.
