I have the ability, vision and a plan - Ranil

by Rodney Martinesz in Minuwangoda

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that he would have no time for idlers in the new government under his leadership and would demand maximum performance from his Ministers and MPs.

Addressing a party election rally in the Minuwangoda town, Mr. Wickremesinghe said his first priority will be to pull the country out of its anarchist state and restore the rule of law to ensure a disciplined society.

The police will be freed from all shackles and restrains allowing it to function independently and take pride in its uniform.

The UNP leader stated that no development could be contemplated in the midst of all round anarchy and breakdown in society as they are witnessing today. The first three months of the new government would be devoted solely in tackling this issue, he stated.

Mr. Wickremesinghe reiterated that he had ability, the vision and a plan to pull the country out of its present mess. He would restart the collapsed industries, bring back investors and provide employment opportunities to the youth of this country.

He would take immediate steps to make the port and the airport fully operational by making arrangements for lifting of the surcharges thereby benefitting our exporters.

Mr. Wickremesinghe also promised loans to industrialists whose businesses had collapsed in order to generate employment. Within the first three months of the new government he will be sending a delegation to the USA to negotiate the Multi Fibre Agreement which will come into force in 2004.

A special plan will also be devised to attract the winter tourists by reviving the collapsed tourism trade.

He said his prime ambition is to put more money in the hands of the people and make them live without fear or want.

One minute's silence was observed as a mark of respect to slain UNP activist Lionel Rodrigo.

Deputy Leader, Karu Jayasuriya, former MPs Edward Gunasekera, Mahen Gunasekera and Ms Shanthini Kongahage were among the speakers.
