Election warms up-country by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya Major plantation trade union in the hill country are busy in mapping out various strategies to woo the voters in view of the forthcoming general election. However, according to political analysts the people of Indian origin and the plantation sector in general say the forthcoming election results will be the most decisive and important focal point in this multi-racial district, comprising Nuwara Eliya, Maskeliya, Walapone, Hnaguranketa and Kotmale. Nuwara Eliya district has a total of 417,264 voters of which almost half are Tamil voters in the plantations. The composition of the voting strength is Walapone 66,671, Kotmale 62,232 Hanguranketa, 60,044, and in the Nuwara Eliya, Maskeliya consists the largest number of 228,327 voters. The PA allied Trade Unions have already started explaining to the estate workers of the various incentives and facilities granted by the present PA Government under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga including the creation of the Ministry of Plantation Infra-structure, Housing Facilities to Estate workers, Wage increases appointment of Tamil Police officers, Grama Niladharies, Modern School facilities and increase in the cadre of teachers for plantation sector and above all the plantation workers have lived without any communal clashes under the PA Government. The five CWC dissident group including former members of Parliament S. Sathasivam, S. Rajaratnam, A. M. D. Rajan, K. Kanagaraj are fighting for supremacy under the PA ticket. Former Minister Arumugam Thondaman's group and the CWC's dissident group S. Sathasivam will hold separate meetings at Nuwara Eliya and other key areas. |
