UNP supported 17th amendment to restore public confidence by Attanagalla Special Corr. UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya said his party extended support to the 17th amendment as those Commissions are absolutely necessary to restore the public confidence in the present political system and institutions. He made these remarks addressing a group of Gampaha district journalists at his residence at Kadawatha last Tuesday. Speaking further he said that violence has raised its head in the run up to the general election. The incident in Minuwangoda to-day is a clear proof of the PA Government's inability to ensure a free and fair election. The time has now come for everybody to respect the people's will in a democratic society, he added. Referring to his fundamental rights case against ANCL, he said, that his counsel has expressed his wiliness to meet the Commissioner of Elections and come to a consensual arrangement with regard to the guidelines already issued in connection with the December 5 General Election. He said, the media should act with responsibility at the time of elections. He appealed to the media men to write without bias in the best interests of the people. |
