LTTE wants UNP to lift ban

Malwana group, Dompe Special and Delgoda Group

Former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike said that the LTTE was behind the UNP with the main purpose of getting the ban against it lifted and the formation of an Eeelam and therefore the people should exercise their vote wisely at the coming election.

Addressing a gathering of party activists at the Dompe Community Hall, Mr. Bandaranaike said that whatever any one may say there is a clear nexus between the UNP and the LTTE. The fact that the UNP leader had not made a public statement refuting this confirms this further.

The occasion was marked by the crossover of a large number of supporters of Mr. Bandaranaike from UNP to the PA.

Mr. Bandaranaike asked the voters not to fall prey to false propaganda and to rally round the PA to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

"We will never allow any individual or force to divide the country. That's why the LTTE organisation is doing its level best to topple the PA Government. They know that their dreams will never be realised."

"The UNP which lost eleven elections in a row will make it twelve on the 5th of December. The people have realised that it was futile to expect solutions to their problems from the UNP. They should now join hands together with the PA. The PA is never a party that will lose.

"The people gave a mandate to the PA and the President to rule the country for six years. However, the UNP did not permit this. Therefore, the people should come forward to teach UNP a good lesson at this coming election.

Some Ministers obtained the maximum benefits from the President. They earned money through fraudulent means, built palaces and fell trees of the Sinharaja forest. In the end they left the Government and have now started to attack President and the Government. There is no doubt that the people will teach them a good lesson at the coming election."

He said the UNP which always talk of introducing a clean political culture to the country had stooped the level of bribing Government MPs to crossover to the Opposition. "Of the nine MPs who left six went for money. They were offered millions in bribes.

"However, a majority of MPs refused the offer of money to betray the party. They should be saluted for their stand.

"Today, there is a lot of resentment among the UNP old timers because of the special treatment offered to the dissidents by the UNP leadership. It won't be long before the UNP as a party disintegrates.

Mr. Bandaranaike said even if the UNP comes to power it is the President who will rule the country till the year 2006. No power on earth can change this. Therefore, it is incumbent on the public to elect a Government with whom the President can work without a conflict.

"This is why the people should vote the PA to power so that it would give the President strength to overcome all the present shortcomings and develop the country.

Earlier the voters of Dompe returned him as an SLFP MP. Thereafter he parted from the SLFP. Now I am back with you again. I offer my gratitude to all of you who supported me all these years, Mr. Anura Bandaranaike said.

Former MP Upali Gunaratne said that since nominations the PA was experiencing an upsurge of support which is a good sign.
