'Strict enforcement of election laws'

Hambantota District Correspondent

Tangalle SSP Sunil Perera said Police will strictly enforce election laws in the Hambantota district and ensure that no posters, banners or cut outs are displayed in unauthorised public places by any of the candidates contesting the forthcoming election.

Mr. Perera addressing a meeting of OICs of all Police stations in the district at his office recently directed them to ensure that this rule is strictly complied with in their respective areas. He said candidates should not be allowed to disfigure other peoples buildings, walls and public places by pasting election posters or displaying cutouts or banners. Candidates should try to win votes by putting out a manifesto detailing their program of work rather than engaging in a poster or cut out war. He said if any posters, banners or cut outs are put out in unauthorised places by night, police should act fast to remove them the following morning itself.

Mr. Perera said that although there was election fever in Hambantota the atmosphere is most peaceful. There is no large scale political violence or thuggery in the district as claimed by certain sections of the media, he said.
