Let's campaign sans polythene, says JVP by Tharika Goonathilake The JVP will shortly invite all political parties to explore the possibilities of reaching a consensus on banning polythene decorations in their political campaigns and rallies. "We will seek a consensus from all political parties to reach an agreement to ban the use of polythene given its detrimental trend on the environment," JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa told the 'Daily News' yesterday. He said that the JVP was aware of the problems caused by polythene and that they will shortly invite other political parties to explore the necessity to reach an agreement to refrain from the use of polythene decorations. "If only one or two parties refrain from using polythene while others continue to use the whole exercise is of no use. But, if all political parties can reach an agreement we can make the run up to this election a no polythene campaign," he said. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Sihala Urumaya also said that they have taken a stand to refrain from the use of polythene decorations in their campaign. "Even at the last election we did not use polythene decorations in any of our rallies, we will continue that stand," the spokesman said. |
