Boost for handloom industry

Trincomalee correspondent

India is producing handloom textiles on a mass scale and labour is reported to be cheaper there than that in our country. It is also said the handloom technology in India is far more advanced than in Sri Lanka.

In the Eastern Province, handloom textiles are produced in the traditional handloom villages of Marathamuna, Katankudy and other villages along the coastal stretch from Batticaloa to Kalmunai.

A quality control program is being introduced to improve the quality and productivity.

A centre has already been started at Kallady with computer aided textile designing to facilitate the new designing technology.

In addition, an entrepreneur development program has been launched in the Marthamunai area to strengthen private sector who have already involved in the handloom industry.

Action has already been taken with the assistance of Department of Textile Industries, Colombo to hold exhibition and sales stalls in Colombo and Kandy for the eastern products.

Negotiations has been successfully completed to obtain the services of two handloom experts from India to train local weavers in high quality products.
