The monthly quota of 500 mt. of wheat flour purchased from the Prima flour mill at China Bay by the Trincomalee MPCS Union has been reduced to 250 mt. a month by Prima Ceylon Ltd the sole producers and distributers of wheat flour.

The Trincomalee MPCS Union is selling flour at a reduced rate without seeking much profits. They buy at Rs. 15.50 a kg of wheat flour from Prima and sell at Rs. 16 a kg wholesale and Rs. 16.50 a kg retail.

The Trincomalee MPCS Union has 24 retail outlets including three model shops and three wholesale depots to serve the people of Trincomalee Town and Gravets division with a population of approximately 110,000 which is about 40 per cent of the population of Trincomalee district.

The President of the Trincomalee MPCS Union P. Jegatheeswaran, General Manager D. Bala Gangatharan and Commercial Manager. N. Sriskandarajah discussed the matter with the Prima Management in Trincomalee and according to Mr. Jegatheeswaran the Prima management was not happy about the MPCS Union selling flour at a low price. They wanted the price increased.

Mr. Jegatheeswaran told the Daily News that if the MPCS Union increase the price of wheat flour, prices of bread and other bakery products will go up much to the inconvenience of the poor people.

The Trincomalee MPCS Union has appealed to the Prima management not to reduce their quota. They have also brought this matter to the notice of the President of Sri Lanka.
