Sri Lanka lose VB opener

Sri Lanka lost to Japan by 3 sets to nil on the second day of the 11th Asian Women's Volleyball Championship now in progress in Bangkok. The scores were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-07.

Though Sri Lanka lost it was a great day for the team as they managed to score 40 points against the strongest team in the tournament.

At the early stage of the game Sri Lanka went ahead scoring the first two points.

Nayana Anupama Jayaratne who was suffering from a stomach upset could not play. Her absence was a real setback for the Lankans as she was the best defence.

Lankan girls kept up the good work and were leading 14-11 at one stage but the Japanese took control and went on to win the set at 25-18.

In the second set Japanese changed their tactics and played to a plan to avoid the Lankans forward march, and went on to win the set at 25-15.

I. D. Ilangakone, Vasanthi Kumari, Anusha Deepani and Kumari Wanniarachchi were outstanding for Lanka.

In a another game Chinese Taipei defeated New Zealand 25-14, 25-8, 25-11. The third game of the day saw China oust Vietnam 25-9, 25-13, 25-12.

On Monday Australia received a walk over, Sri Lanka was scheduled to play New Zealand yesterday.

Sri Lanka's defender Nayana who has recovered completely was due to play in this game.
