Upali dailies not published yesterday

The two Upali dailies, "The Island" and "Divaina" were not published yesterday when a group of workers went on strike following the termination of the services of a trade unionist by the management. The striking workers are attached to the type setting and page making divisions, UNL sources told the "Daily News".

The "Daily News" learns that the editorial Staff is not involved in the Trade Union action.

Homeguards remanded over elephant killing

Five homeguards produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate Harsha Setunga in connection with the alleged killing of a pregnant female elephant were remanded till November 24 when they failed to provide surety bail in a sum of Rs. 100,000 each ordered by the Magistrate recently.

Mahawilachchiya Police who produced the suspects said the elephant which had been shot on September 21 had succumbed to its injuries the following day despite all efforts made by wild life officials to save its life. The post mortem report said the elephant was two weeks pregnant. The suspects were arrested on information provided by the villagers in Dunumandalawa.

NIE vandana cassette for all schools

Deviating from the traditional way of teaching methods, according to the newly introduced education reforms, the National Institute of Education produces an audio cassette, as a teaching equipment with Gathas, Slokokas, Naraseha Gatha, Jayamangala Gatha, Seth Pirith and Pirith which are included in Buddhism textbooks of Grades 6 and 11.

In anticipation of teaching the students correct pronunciation of Pali Gathas and correct singing 'Vandana' audio cassette will be a guidance to the students as well as for the teachers. It can be used in school ceremonies also. In December this 'Vandana' Cassettee will be sent to all schools through the Provincial Education Ministers.

The concept person of the Vandana Cassette the Director of the Religious Department, of the National Institute of Education Ven. Tissamaharama Punna Thera told Daily News.

The students of Devi Balika, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Balika, D.S. Senanayake, Ananda, Nalanda, Visaka, Nugegoda Samudra Devi Balika and Central College Maharagama contributed their singing talents in producing the cassette.

Church feast

The annual feast of the St. Anne's Church, Hiniduma will be held on September 29 and 30 on a grand scale for the 108th time.

All arrangements have been made by the administrator of the Parish Church Rev. Fr. Lalith Fernando and the festival committee providing more facilities such as pilgrims rests, water, electricity and sanitary facilities for devotees attending the festival.

This Church located at Hiniduma on the bank of Ginganga close to the Galle - Neluwa road via Udugama about 51 kilometres away from Galle town.

During the last three years much development work has been done at the Church premises giving a face-lift to the old Church.

A new mission house was also constructed in connection with the 2000th birth anniversary of Lord Jesus Christ.

This year's feast begins on September 29 at 5.00 p.m. with Vespers and ends on September 30th noon with Holy Mass.

The annual procession will parade the streets on the 29th night and 30th morning. On Sunday noon the annual feast and St. Anne's Procession will end with the Grand feast.

Institute of Biology annual sessions today

The 21st Annual Session of the Institute of Biology will be held at the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science Auditorium on Friday (28).

The Chief Guest will be Higher Education Ministry Secretary, Prof. R. P. Gunawardane.

Prof. S.A Kulasooriya will deliver a special lecture on 'Biology for National Development', and the key note address will be delivered by Prof. U.M. Senanayake on 'Biology in Industry'.

Colombo University Senior Lecturer, Dr. Maiya Gunasekera will deliver the guest lecture on 'Applications of Molecular Biology in Medicine and Industry'. A technical session will also be held after the annual sessions.
