Remand for suspects in cheque robbery

Two suspects have been taken into custody by the Nikaweratiya Police in connection with the robbery of a cheque for Rs. 95.000 from the possession of the Principal of Kobaigane Maha Vidyalaya last Thursday.

SP Nikaweratiya Police Gamini Amarakoon told the Daily News that on the day of the incident the Principal of Kobaigane Maha Vidyalaya had gone to encash the cheque to a private bank at Nikaweratiya, when the two suspects had pounced on him and snatched the cheque and fled away.

However Nikaweratiya Police acting swiftly on a tip off had managed to apprehend the two suspects within the Nikaweratiya town itself and recover the cheque.

Of the two suspects, one is believed to be an army deserter, SP Gamini Amarakoon said.

The two men have been further remanded after being produced in the Nikaweratiya Courts.
