by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy The main objective of the conducting of the special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Dalada Maligawa Kandy was to wish that the country got rains and to bless the country. This objective of getting rains has already been achieved with heavy rains experienced from the day President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge made the first offerings to the Sacred Tooth Relic after the Relic was deposited at the Pirith Mandapaya for the exposition. This was said by Diyawadana Nilame, Neranjan Wijeyaratne to the 'Daily News' yesterday (25th). "Drizzling started at the time the special exposition commenced with the President making the first offering. That developed to heavy rain from the next day and upto today we are getting rains" he added. Nearly half a million devotees from all walks of life and all parts of the country have viewed the Sacred Relic during the first few days. Among them were a larger number from drought stricken areas like Hambantota and Moneragala who were so happy over getting rains to their areas ending the severe drought. The special exposition enters the 5th day today (6th) and it will continue till October 7th daily from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm. "It is like a repetition of history. When there was a very severe drought in the country due to which the people suffered, the Tooth Relic exposition was held at the Mahamaluwa with the permission of the British rulers. From the time the relic was brought to the Mahamaluwa heavy rains began to fall ending the drought. That was followed by heavy floods. That happened in 1827" added Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne. |
