by Manjula Fernando The catchments of the main hydro power reservoirs have not received sufficient rain to warrant any reduction in power cuts, the Power and Energy Ministry said yesterday. A spokesman said, although the country is experiencing heavy rain, major catchment areas except for those feeding Laxapana reservoir received very little rainfall. "The power cut however, has to be continued until major catchments receive a significant rainfall to increase power generation," he said. According to him power-stations Victoria and Rantambe of the Mahaweli hydro power complex recorded less than 5.2mm rainfall during the 24 hours ending 6 am yesterday. The other station Randenigala recorded only 0.8mm. The power generation capacity of the three complexes are : Mahaweli 665 mega watts, Laxapana 335 Mw and Samanalawewa 120 Mw. The recorded rainfall at Laxapana catchment areas for the 24 hours ending 9 am yesterday were Norton 80mm, Canyon 75mm, Laxapana 93mm, Castlereigh 50mm, Maussakelle 55mm. The rainfall for Samanalawewa stood at 10mm. Meanwhile, the Met Department said that the rains caused due to the disturbance in the Bay of Bengal would continue for at least another two days. The spokesman was also of the view that a typhoon developing near Thailand might aggravate the mild disturbance in the Bay of Bengal resulting in more rains in Sri Lanka and hopefully increased rainfall in catchment areas. "However, such a development is too early to be sure," he said. The highest rainfall for the 24 hours ending 9am yesterday was recorded at Yatiyantota and the lowest rainfall from the North and East. Colombo has recorded 60.6 mm of rain during this period. He said the drought hit Hambantota area had not received any significant rainfall so far although Badulla, Bandarawela and Nuwara Eliya were experiencing heavy rains. The recorded rainfall for Hambantota for the said period was only 1.2mm. |
