Oliver! A celebration in itself

As S. Thomas' College concludes the festivities of their 150th anniversary, it is only fitting that they do so with a production of the Drama Society, a legacy nearly as old as the institution itself.

This time around the Drama Society has chosen to stage Oliver! The Musical a celebration itself of Charles Dickens' most sougth after novel. The performance will take place on the 28th, 29th and 30th of September and the 1st of October at the Lionel Wendt theatre.

The director of the production, Vinodh Senedeera, has decided to stage Oliver! with a 'twist' in order to vary from the popular musical which has been performed time and time again. This production has Arun Dias Bandaranaike, an Old Boy of the school, narrating the play as an adult Oliver in retrospective of his eventful childhood. Through his words, a tale of poverty, discrimination, deception and the ultimate triumph of good over evil, unfolds.

The rest of the cast includes Troy Manatunga as the kind-hearted Nancy, Ayendra Wickremasekera as the sadistic Bill Sikes, Lanka Rathnayake as the bulbous Mr. Bumble, and of course the shroud old Fagin played by Arrvinda Salwatura. Sanil de Alwis, Dushyantha Rathnayake, Navin Perera, Yehan Ranasinghe and Ranshan Gomez take the rest of the lead roles.

The play promises to have no shortage of colour and vibrancy as it boasts all the songs from the original musical as well some innovative choreography. Dilani Perera and Romina Gyi are handling the music and the choreography respectively. Although Vinodh has produced many shows with the Drama Society which include Playing Doctor, The Importance of Being Ernest, The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Play, Nothing Really Matters and most recently, King Oedipus, this is the first time he has had to deal with a cast eighty-one strong. Though working with a large cast proved to be exhausting, it is invaluable in breeding new blood into drama at STC, he says.

Tickets are available at the College office and at the Lionel Wendt.
