Will Havelocks be third time lucky'

Will Havelocks be third time lucky ? .. The answer to this question will be found only tomorrow evening when the park club confronts CH and FC in the quarter-final of the Caltex inter-club knock-out Rugby Tournament for the Clifford Cup at Longden Place.

CH and FC won both matches in the Caltex 'A' division league by 30-13 and 29-22 and it is left to be seen whether the rejuvenated Havelocks can make amends for their defeats by overcoming the lads from Maitland crescent who suffered a morale-shattering 8-46 defeat at the hands of Kandy SC in their last outing in the League Tournament.

The park club have made two changes for tomorrow's match. Miskin Deen has been brought in as a flanker to replace Nishantha Bopearachchi while former CR and Sri Lanka centre Haren Perera comes into the side at the expense of Nishantha Chanaka and he will play alongside Jiffrey Saheed. CH and FC too have made two changes. Sanjeev Shanmuganathan makes a welcome return to the side after a three year lay off and will play in his accustomed role as flanker with Prasad Batepola moving to the second row. No. 8 Shyam Subullah also returns to the side displacing Asanka Thalagalarachchi.

Possession will play a vital role in the final outcome. In the set scrums CH and FC's Sameera Wijeyesinghe should get the better of his vis-a-vis Rajiv Perera while in the line outs the Havelocks duo of Saranaratne and Jayasena have the edge over CH's solitary jumper Prassad Batepola.

The park club's halves combination of Sudath Sampath and Tikiri Dissanayake hit it off smoothly in the last few matches and Havelocks will hope that they will give a repeat performance as they have some hard and penetrative runners in Saheed, Heren Perera, Jayawardena and Sanjeewa Jayasinghe who are capable of piercing the CH defence. Winger Sanjeewa Jayasinghe will pose the biggest threat to CH with his powerful runs down the flank.

CH also boasts of a fine set of three quarters. In Milinda Jayasinghe and Nalin Dissanayake they have an experienced halves combination while Saranga Jayakody, Jude Pillal and sturdily built Ajit Upawansa are likely to test the Havelocks defence to the hilt with their probing runs with full back Dinuk de S. Wijeyaratne joining the line to form the overlap.

CH AND FC - Sashika Cooray, Sameera Wijeyesinghe, Jayantha Ranaweera, D. Jayasekera, Prasad Batepola, Kokum Seneviratne, Sanjeev Shanmuganathan, Shyam Subullah, Milinda Jayasinghe and Nalin Dissanayake, Ajit Upawansa (Captain), Saranga Jayakody, Jude Pillei, L. Chandana, Dinuk de S. Wijeyeratne.

HAVELOCKS - Dilan Ekanyake, Rajiv Perera, Shafi Hassan, Rajiv Sornaratne, Kavinda Jayasena, Miskin Deen, Siva Wanasinghe, Rajiv Ganapathy, Sudath Sampath and Tikiri Dissanayake, Sanjeewa Jayasinghe (captain), Jiffrey Saheed, Haren Perera, Tisal Jayawardena, Lalindra Rodrigo. (R.S.)
