Batting coach Richards arrives next week Former South African Test opener Barry Richards has been contracted by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka to conduct a program in batting for 20 national level players including the Sri Lanka team, and a similar number of coaches. Richards is expected to arrive on September 24 and commence his program from September 25 to October 6. The sessions include workshops on theory, video filming, video analysis and net sessions. Sri Lanka team coach Dav Whatmore will be participating in the program where Richards will be assisted by Roshan Mahanama, Owan Mottau and Hemantha Devapriya. Among the coaches who will be participating in the workshops will be the BCCSL's national coaches, provincial coaches and premier division I club coaches. Coaches who need further details of this program are requested to contact the BCCSL's director cricket operations Bandula Warnapura (tel 681601). Warnapura said that Richards' program in Sri Lanka is mainly connected with the 2003 World Cup in South Africa where the batsmen will be up against fast and bouncy pitches. Sri Lanka batsmen showed a weakness playing under those conditions when they toured South Africa last year and Richards having come to Sri Lanka on several occasions as a TV commentator has first hand information of our batsmen's shortcomings against such bowling. Players from the Sri Lanka 'A' and under 19 squads will also participate. - [S.T.] |
