LSSP CC member dead

Lanka Samasamaja Party central committee member, Gunasena Fernando died.

He served as a teacher at Kandeketiya Vidyalaya, Badulla and contested the general elections 1977 for Viyaluwa electorate and in 1988 Provincial Councils election for Badulla district.

His funeral takes place at the General Cemetery, Borella on September 22.

His remains lie at his residence at 190, Kalapaluwawa, Rajagiriya.

Raul Sunico in concert

Raul Sunico in concert in aid of the Breast Health Centre, National Hospital of Sri Lanka and a free Breast Cancer Screening service for underprivileged women.

Internationally acclaimed Philippine pianist Raul Sunico will visit Sri Lanka to give two different performances of Classical Piano. Enjoy works of Chopin, Haydn, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Scriabin and other legendary composers.

The performances are on October 1, 7 pm Dinner Concert Hilton Grand Ballroom and October 3, 7.30 pm at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.

Two students drown

Two students M. Rangika Manoj (18) of Dodangahawathukanda and Ruwan Gayathree Silva (17) of Medalanda a year 11 class students of Dompe Siyane National School were drowned in the Kelani river while bathing at Kapugoda last Monday during the day time.

This was stated at the inquest held on their deaths by the Siyane Korale East Inquirer Dharmasena Senadeera.

The Inquirer recorded a verdict of accidental deaths due to drowning.

Dompe police led evidence.

Boost for fresh water fish industry

The Fisheries Ministry has taken initiatives to double its fresh water fish breeding capacity to prevent a possible scarcity of fresh water fish, Ministry sources told the "Daily News" yesterday.

Sources said that following the prolonged drought, over 120 tanks and reservoirs have dried up causing complete destruction of fish broods in the drought stricken areas. Under this program a large quantity of fish broods will be re-introduced into tanks in the drought affected areas.

Sources added that over 5000 fishing families have been affected by the drought and it will take another six months to grow these broods for a harvest. However, until then fishing families in the drought stricken areas will be provided with food relief, sources assured.

Health hazard

The garbage collected from fish stalls at Veyangoda town is dumped by the side of the bus stand road daily.

This has become a health hazard. The stench around the area is unbearable. The drinking water around the market area is also said to be polluted.

Pradeshiya Sabha Members, Thilak Perera and Sarath Premasiri have brought it to the notice of Attanagalla PS Chairman, Hemachandra Pathirana.

Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara commemorated

A national ceremony to commemorate the Father of Free Education late Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara will be held at the Welimada Madya Maha Vidyalaya premises on September 24 at 9.15 a.m. presided over by Uva Chief Minister Samaraweera Weerawanni.

A highlight will be the award of prizes and certificates to the winners of an all island essay competition held in memory of late Dr. Kannangara.

Special lectures will be delivered by Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, Local Government and Southern Development Deputy Minister Susil Premajayantha, Pandula Endagama, Prof. K. Dharmasena and Mrs. Hema Ratnayake.

The ceremony is jointly organised by the Welimada Madya Maha Vidyalaya PPA and the All Ceylon Madya Vidyala PPA, said Maithree Wijesinghe of the organising committee.
