Government to provide infrastructure facilities to all

By Ananda Kannangara

Urban Development, Public Utilities, Construction, Housing and Sports, Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that the Government was keen to provide infrastructure facilities to all people in the country.

He was speaking at a meeting at BMICH to coincide with the opening of the "Build int' Asia-2001 ", the second regional conference and exhibition. The meeting was organised by the Urban Development Authority, the Real Estate Exchange (Pvt) Limited. (REEL) and the JRP International.

He said: "Therefore we are embarking on a massive development program during the next five years, particularly in the fields of urban development, infrastructure and human settlements."

"The aim of our construction industry is to ensure the achievement of proper integration of the inputs of the constituent partners, co-ordination of their work and the efficient and productive utilisation of their capacities".

The Minister said Infrastructure in the most cities in the region including Colombo cannot cater to the ever-increasing population and this has resulted in slum settlements where water and sanitation services are very poor.

The water and sewerage networks which have hardly been rehabilitated over the past few decades cannot cope with the increased demand. He further said that urban development programs are needed considering the rising population.

Minister Samaraweera also thanked the organisers of the UDA, REEL and JRP international for their work in the construction industry.
