Sanghadikarana Act to be introduced soon - PM

L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy and Kandy District Group Corr.

Prime Minister and Minister of Buddha Sasana Ratnasiri Wickremanayake told Most Ven. Mahanayake Theras of Malwatte and Asgiriya in Kandy yesterday that measures would be taken to enact the necessary laws with the view to protect the dignity and reverence of Maha Sangha and help them solve their problems through the proposed Sanghadikarana Act, which would be introduced in Parliament soon.

Mr. Wickremanayake called on the Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter and Most Ven. Udugama Sri Rathanapala Buddharakkhitha Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter at their respective Viharayas in Kandy and received their blessings.

Most Ven. Vipassi Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter told the Prime Minister that he was very happy over the policies and the way of working of the Prime Minister who, he (prelate) believed to be a good Buddhist.

The Prime Minister said that the Sanghadikarana Act (Judicial body of the Maha Sangha) has already been drafted and it would be introduced in Parliament next month. According to that Act, the Sanghadikaranaya would be headed by a team of leading Buddhist priests including four Mahanayake Theras. Decisions arrived at by that body would be referred to the relevant Court of law in order to make those decisions lawful.

In reply to the Mahanayake Theras Prime Minister said that the Government was not a coalition of the PA and JVP but it was a PA government. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two Peramunas was to guide the activities of the Government so that the JVP would continue to support the government in Parliament for a specific period. Most of the contents of that MoU were the policies announced to the public by the PA in its Election Manifesto. Therefore, there would be no problem in implementing them.

However, most of them were subjected to legal implications so that they had to go Courts to get rulings before they were implemented, added Prime Minister Wickremanayake.

The Prime Minister also called on Most Ven. Udugama Sri Rathanapala Buddharakkhitha Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter and received his blessings.
