Galle Face Green to be reopened

The Galle Face Green, redeveloped at a cost of Rs. 70 million, will be declared open to the public by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake tomorrow (23) at 1 pm.

An international kite festival and a fireworks display will be held to mark the occasion. There will be over 80 participants for the kite festival from Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, India and 100 from Sri Lanka.

The redevelopment of the Galle face Green is a part of an ambitious project of making Colombo South Asia's Regional, commercial and shipping hub. It will also promote Colombo as a world class city, Chairman of the Urban Development Authority Dr. Krishan Deheragoda told the Daily News yesterday.

There will be strict do's and don't at the Green. Activities which will be permitted include: walking, running, exercising, picnicking, vendors with trays, wheel chairs on paths that are specifically designated for them, displays, informal shows, etc on sandy stage areas and also provisions for impromptu speeches etc at the Speaker's Corner, he said.

Littering, defacement, damage, public nuisance of any sort, vehicles, motor cycles (except grass maintenance vehicles on grass areas and maintenance, service, security, emergency, VIP vehicles on tarmac promenade), bicycles ( except on tarmac promenade), carts, kiosks, stalls, tables, chairs, exhibits advertisements etc ( except on designated paved, sandy areas), stages, shelters ( except on sandy stage areas), cricket football, rugby and similar games, sports, pony rides ( except on tarmac promenade), hoardings and heavy shoes on grass areas will not be permitted.

Dr. Deheragoda also said that the project itself will be undertaken by numerous line Ministries, State organisations in collaboration with the local/ foreign private sector. Administratively, the GFG has been vested with the UDA for the purpose of administration and funding, he said.
